Cloud Database Architecture
A cloud database is a database that runs on a cloud platform. Using it needs to be like using any database, and cloud database architecture is what makes that possible.
You can run a cloud database in one of two ways:
- As a virtual machine instance bought for a fixed time. Upload your own machine image with an installed database, or use a pre-installed optimized database machine image; or
- As Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS)
The advantage of DBaaS is similar to the advantage of most aaS applications: installing and maintaining the database are taken care of by the service provider, and the user can concentrate on just that – using the database, while paying only for the use.
There will usually be a web-based console, from which the user configures a database instance.
The architecture includes a database manager, with the API available to the user.
The database will be infinitely scalable. As well as the database and the software to manage it, the architecture will also include the operating system; installing and maintaining this stack is the task of the service provider.
